Important travel tips: Paris
Plan your trip for at least four days
If you are currently planning a trip to Paris for the first time, I strongly recommend that you plan at least 4 days in the city.
That doesn't mean you can't enjoy just a day or a weekend in Paris, but four days is really the minimum to get a feel for the city. Relax a bit, and actually enjoy your time in front of the sights until you cry.
Of course, the bonus of adding more days is that you can include some major day trips like Disneyland Paris or Versailles.
Book your hotel in advance
Paris is one of the busiest tourist cities in the world, which means the best (and most affordable) hotels book up quickly, especially during peak season.
The solution to the hunger games of this Paris hotel? Book early
I know it can feel scary to commit to a hotel early, but if you use Booking.com you can find hundreds of hotels that offer free booking and free cancellation up to a certain point.
This means you can have peace of mind for a long time to come without putting down a deposit or committing to a hard date.
Be aware that the hotel star system in Europe is different from North America
I grew up with a hotel system in North America where 5* meant lavish luxury and 1* meant running for the hills unless you wanted to lose your kidneys.
The star rating is slightly different in Europe. Instead of stars corresponding to quality on a scale of 1-5, stars actually correspond to a checklist of features/requirements.
So, you can get some amazing 2* properties that are simply smaller and don't really have things like spas or pools, while you can also find crappy 4 or 5* properties that get that rating just because they're big. and features such as fitness centers and valets (ie many chains).
